A “sporadic” presence of the wolf observed in Puy-de-Dôme

There are no wolves installed in Puy-de-Dôme, the prefecture promises. However, a presence “sporadic” of the wolf has been highlighted by the French Biodiversity Office “taking into account records of signs of the presence of the species”. For farmers, “it is possible to grant subsidies for the preventive acquisition and maintenance of guard dogs for sheep and goat herds to holdings located in the communes of the Puy-de-Dôme department”.

These findings were communicated following the meeting of the department’s wolf committee on 12 December 2022 as part of the National Wolf Action Plan 2018-2023. The French Biodiversity Office presented “an update on signs of presence and on findings of damage”. It was during this meeting that the mechanism to compensate breeders “was initiated by the services of the state”.

The prefecture specifies: “For the year 2023 and especially with the classification in circle 3 (that is, an area where expansion is possible) of the department, the system open to all the communes of Puy-de-Dôme will allow to finance 80% of purchases and maintenance of guard dogs, and 100% of the technical support for breeders to set up these dogs. » For now, the animal is therefore not installed on the territory.
