Let’s do against bad luck, good heart – in view of the prices charged at the pump – and immerse ourselves for a few moments in the world of the people’s electric car, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX.
I must admit that, lately, we have the impression that brands no longer know how to offer anything other than electric cars. It must be said that it is quite trendy when you see that the price of gasoline continues to rise and that each time you fill up, the anxiety rises during the last kilometers. So much so that some of us are content to do half-full to make it a little less psychologically hard.
This Volkswagen ID.4 bears the GTX acronym – instead of GTI – which characterizes the sports versions of the German manufacturer’s electric range. The ID.4 GTX is therefore a kind of mid-size SUV, equipped with a 300 horsepower engine and four-wheel drive. Handling, as with all electrics, is impressive, with the low-lying batteries giving this trend even more weight. Not having been able to test the ID4 in the rain, it is difficult to know what it gives in wet conditions, but let’s say that in the dry, it is closer to double-sided tape than anything else.
Autonomy downhill and the wind at your back
On paper, the SUV from Wolfsburg would have a range of 480 kilometers when fully charged. I don’t want it to be said that I’m a bad language and that I don’t like electric cars, but as usual on everything that is charged at 220 volts, the problem is not comfort, the finish quality or top speeds. No, the problem is always – and it will be for a while – autonomy. I must say that by dint of learning to plugger and unplugger cars of the same style, I got used to reloading whenever I have the chance. And as long as we stay in the outer suburbs and less than 100 kilometers from home, it’s going well.
On the other hand, as soon as you are looking to go away for the weekend, it becomes much more complicated. Unless the weekend in question is also less than 100 kilometers from home. As long as you live in Geneva and want to leave in October, that leaves only a few possible destinations.
From 480 to… 330
On paper it allows us to do Geneva-Marseille. In real life, on the other hand, with an outside temperature of 25 degrees, the air conditioning working, the radio blaring and U2 on a loop, you will not go further than Montélimar. In the best case.
In conclusion, this car is a success in terms of size, comfort and road performance. Afterwards, it would be almost better with the GTI engine and its 245 horsepower gasoline, but it seems that it is no longer fashionable. All that remains is to get used to riding quietly… with the wind at your back.
