“We completely redid it. We’ve worked a lot, we’ve been there for a year,” smiles Nina Mourad, who is launching with Chant, her 19-year-old son, at No. 63. Their business, with its indigo blue storefront, where people can eat on swing chairs, is ready. Two days before the big jump, the impatience of the son and his mother is palpable. The two may be neophytes in the business – he is a law and language student, she helps at home – they were not afraid to get started, even in a street scolded for its lack of appeal.
Ice cream for dessert
“Anyway, you have to try,” says Nina, a small woman with infectious enthusiasm and a smile still hanging on her face. “Even our banker didn’t believe in this street. He was convinced by the concept”, adds an ambitious Chant: “I traveled a lot with my girlfriend. She introduced me to poke bowls. People will love it,” believes the youngest of this family of Armenians from Turkey, who immigrated to France seventeen years ago.
Their arrival is not to displease Catherine, the neighbor, a tea seller. “Already, the street is flowery. And it also seems that there is more traffic, ”rejoices the shopkeeper, observing the pedestrians walking near the palm trees installed by the municipality. This Saturday, July 2 morning, families and tourists stroll, warmed by the rays of the sun which pass between the decorative green ribbons. Some look away to find out what’s new. It was better not to miss an episode: in one year, a dozen cases were created in the artery. And it’s not over: a space selling ice cream, waffles and other cotton candy is preparing to open for the weekend of July 9, at the bottom of the street.
“In the middle of a dream”
These successive creations lowered the commercial vacancy rate (up to 30% at one time). Even if there are still many empty goods, the context arouses a certain alacrity. “I’m in the middle of a dream,” gets carried away Laury Rivet, owner of the new Little Store. “Ripped off” for its opening in early June, she “didn’t expect there to be so many people”: “Honestly, I wasn’t looking to come here, I was looking more for rue d’Angoulême, rue du Canton. Today, I am delighted, ”displays the trader.
