Summer holidays: monokini, food, pets… what is allowed and forbidden at the beach

On vacation, the feeling of freedom takes place. However, not everything is permitted. We take stock.

Synonymous with freedom and holidays, the coast is nonetheless a natural space shared by all where certain rules must be observed.

Sleep, eat, drink… Wild camping, and therefore unfolding your tent, is prohibited. On the other hand, falling asleep on the sand, under the stars, lulled by the sound of the waves is not verbalizable. No restriction on eating and drinking, except that of throwing waste in the trash. Regarding alcohol, drunkenness on the public highway and therefore on the beach, is punishable by a fine of 150 euros.

Bury yourself in the sand? Nothing forbids it except that the game can be deadly! One can die of suffocation, if the sand enters the respiratory tract, or compresses the rib cage with its weight. 52 accidents of this type have been recorded in ten years.

Sand castles and pebble sculptures. No rules, but the protectors of the coast ask that the works be destroyed when they leave the beach, putting the elements back in their original place.

Start the fire. It’s forbidden ! The risk of falling on World War II munitions rising to the surface of the sand with erosion is great. On the other hand, the use of the cigarette, or the hookahs is not prohibited, except municipal decree and on the beaches without tobacco. The pocket ashtray is essential!

Practice the monokini. In 1980, more than 43% of women under 50 tanned topless, compared to 22% today. Except in special cases, there is no regulation on this choice.

What rules for your pet? Exposing yourself to a fine of 38 €, on a prohibited beach. The mayors evoke health reasons related to excreta. Some municipalities offer small specific time slots. You have to inquire at the tourist office.

Can we reserve our place? On crowded beaches, towels are sometimes left well in advance in order to reserve the location. Unlike Italy, which sanctions vacationers who anticipate, France refuses to do so in the name of the principle of freedom of access to public beaches. Get there first!

What does the law say about lovemaking? The marine atmosphere contributes to the temptation on the beach! But love at the beach can constitute an offense of sexual exhibition imposed on the sight of others, in a place accessible to the gaze of the public, and you incur a prison sentence and/or a fine of 15,000 €.

Can we walk along a private beach? Private beaches are subject to regulations, and must leave a free strip along the sea of 3 to 5 meters. From a legal point of view, a private beach is a temporary authorization to occupy the public domain, issued by the prefecture to an occupant, who will have to dismantle the installation at the end of the season.
