Takeover of Twitter: Elon Musk promises the EU that the platform will respect European law on online content

Elon Musk has assured the European Commission that Twitter will continue to respect European rules in terms of controlling illegal content online, now that the social network has come under its control, we learned on Monday from European sources.

During an exchange last week, the American multi-billionaire told Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, that he intended to comply with European legislation on digital services, which imposes heavy fines on companies demonstrating laxity with regard to illegal content.

The self-described free speech absolutist has agreed to meet Thierry Breton, France’s former finance minister, in the coming weeks, EU officials told Reuters.

The exchange came after Thierry Breton posted a message on Twitter on Friday reminding Elon Musk of the primacy of new European legislation.

“In Europe, the bird will fly according to our European rules“, said the commissioner.

Elon Musk’s assurances seem to suggest a pragmatic attitude on the part of the chief executive of the car manufacturer Tesla, who has already expressed his wish to see Twitter relax the framework of the content that can be published.
